Reading a fastener specification
Standard & geometry
A DIN, ISO or ASTM reference identifies defined requirements. Confirm the exact edition, dimensions and whether an alternative standard is approved.
Thread & engagement
Specify the thread system, diameter, pitch, tolerance and engagement. Metric and imperial threads or different pitches are not interchangeable.
Joint compatibility
Select the bolt, nut, washer and mating component together. Property class, bearing area and coating must suit the approved joint design.
Inspection & traceability
Agree dimensional checks, required mechanical or material tests, batch identification and documents before the order is accepted.
Materials & surface treatments
Materials
Carbon steel, alloy steel and stainless steel may be specified. Exact material and grade must be confirmed for each product.
Property classes
Specify the required mechanical property class and relevant test requirements rather than selecting by appearance.
Surface finishes
Common options include plain finish, zinc plating, hot dip galvanizing, zinc flake and zinc nickel. Availability requires confirmation.
Drawings & tolerances
For special components, provide a revision-controlled drawing, tolerances, material and inspection requirements.
