Differences Between Full and Half Thread Bolts
Selecting either full or half-threaded bolts depends on whether the joint requires maximum grip strength or shear resistance.
Understanding the application
A fully threaded bolt offers thread along most of its shank. A partially threaded bolt includes an unthreaded grip whose position must match the joint thickness.
Selection & technical considerations
Where an engineer requires a plain shank at a shear plane, select thread length and grip length deliberately. Neither form is universally stronger for every joint.
Practical checks before use
Specify overall length, threaded length, diameter and standard. Confirm that the nut can seat correctly without reaching the thread runout.
