Fundamental Differences Between Nuts and Bolts
While they work together, nuts and bolts serve different functions in a joint, with the bolt providing the stud and the nut providing the clamp.
Understanding the application
A bolt has an external thread and usually a head; a nut has an internal thread. Together they can clamp the parts of a removable joint.
Selection & technical considerations
Tightening develops tension in the bolt and compression across the joint. The nut supports engagement and transfers force through its bearing face.
Practical checks before use
Match the thread system, pitch and property requirements. A nut that starts on a bolt is not automatically a suitable strength or dimensional match.
